About the Event
Wells Fargo in Sacramento 1852 - 1918
The history of Sacramento and Wells Fargo & Company are deeply intertwined. When Wells Fargo opened its first office in San Francisco on March 17, 1852, the company’s second office opened the very next day in Sacramento, cementing its role in the region’s rapid growth during the Gold Rush.
Join the Sacramento Historical Society on Tuesday, February 24th, for a fascinating exploration of how Wells Fargo became a cornerstone of Sacramento’s early economy, providing critical banking, shipping, and express services to a booming frontier city. As the era of railroads reshaped California, Wells Fargo entered a complex and often turbulent relationship with the Central Pacific Railroad, followed by corporate control under the Southern Pacific Railroad. This chapter of the story culminates in 1918, when Wells Fargo’s domestic express business was absorbed into the newly formed American Railway Express.
