About the Event
Join the Sacramento Historical Society on Tuesday, May 26 for an evening exploring one of Sacramento’s most distinctive historic buildings—the iconic Elks Tower at 921 11th Street.
Sacramento architect Peter Dannenfelser has been closely involved with the care and renovation of this remarkable structure for more than two decades. Built in 1926 with funds raised entirely by the Elks membership, the 14-story steel-framed building—clad in brick and terra cotta—remains one of Sacramento’s architectural gems and a striking feature of the downtown skyline.
In this illustrated presentation, Peter will share the story behind the tower’s creation, including the Elks as a fraternal organization, the hiring of a local architect, the design and construction of the building, and the many beautiful details that make it such a memorable landmark. He will also explore the building’s original functions and how the structure continues to serve new purposes today.
