An Examination Into The 1975 - 1982, 1984 Capitol Restoration Project

Decades after its grand opening, the restored California State Capitol continues to draw global attention. This monumental restoration project, the largest of its kind for a single building, is a testament to the state's commitment to preserving its history. While the antique furnishings make up less than 1% of the $70 million cost, they are universally recognized as a crucial element in this living tribute to the state’s 19th-century arts and technology.

The restoration itself took some six years and—perhaps inevitably in this center of politics—did not proceed without controversy. Everyone agreed that some work was essential, as a 1971 seismic survey had shown that the building constructed between 1860 and 1874 could not withstand a strong earthquake, as required under state law. Some wanted to replace the structure, favoring a 17-story twin-tower model. Eventually, those favoring the preservation of the capital won the day.
