About The Event
The Railyards development project holds great promise for the future of Sacramento. But at the
heart of this project is history. And at the heart of this history is Sacramento’s significant
railroad heritage. California State Parks owns two of the remaining eight historic buildings of
the Railyards, which the California State Railroad Museum utilizes for the storage, restoration,
and maintenance of its important collection of locomotives and rolling stock. These important
buildings, however, hold even more promise for helping people to imagine their futures by
understanding their past. The Shop's reimagining, once completed, will significantly expand the
Railroad Museum’s campus. The Shops will be equal parts space for community, a meaningful
tourist attraction, and a laboratory of learning, where people at every level of education will
learn by doing. Those parts, along with the existing museum, will add up to a shining beacon for
the City of Sacramento and a world-class educational facility like none other. Join museum
director, Ty Smith, PhD, in a talk about the new vision for two buildings that are at the heart of
Sacramento’s history and future.
